Recording Your Presentation on Zoom

Please note: To record directly in the TMS platform, please see How to Record below.

Important Information

  • You will need to use the Zoom application (“app”), not the website. If you do not already have it installed, you can download the app at https://zoom.us/download.
  • Before you begin recording, quit all software not related to your presentation. Programs like email, instant messaging, antivirus software, and even internet browsers may interrupt your recording with pop-ups and notification sounds.
  • Always do a short recording test before starting your presentation and watch it to make sure everything is working correctly. After watching your test, you may need to adjust your microphone settings, change the position of your camera, or something else.
    • You cannot review your test recording while in a Zoom “meeting.” You must “End Meeting” to process and access a recording.
    • If recording with multiple people, please ask that they do a test on their own before your scheduled recording time.
  • If you are recording two or more people please have everyone use headphones to avoid feedback or echo.
  • If at any time you have issues, please contact Zoom support.

Setting Up Zoom

Before you hit the record button, please follow these instructions to ensure you have the optimal recording set up. If you have other presenters joining you, please ask them to do the same.

Open the downloaded app on your computer.

If you are recording alone or the person managing recording multiple presenters, select the “Record” tab from the “Settings” screen. Check or select the following options:

When sharing your screen, you can either only share your screen (unchecked) or have the person talking on the screen as well (checked). We recommend having the video next to the shared screen for a better viewer experience.

When the screen is shared, the default is set to have the speaker image be small. To change the size of the speaker image or the shared screen, hover your pointer in between the images and drag the grey line separating both views.

How to Record

Select “New Meeting” on the home page of the Zoom app.

Select “Turn On Original Sound” located in the top left of the meeting video window. Important: If recording with others, ask the other participants to also select “Turn On Original Sound”

If recording with multiple people, adjust the “View” to mimic how you would like your final video to appear. Zoom only records the visual that the person recording the session sees so you must adjust the “view” accordingly.

Select “Speaker View” to record ONLY the individual talking and not the full group. Note: The people at the top of the screen will not be seen in the recording.

Select “Gallery View” to record multiple people on video whether they are talking or not. Often this view is referred to as the “grid” or “Brady Bunch” view.

When you are ready to begin, select “Record” in the bottom tool bar

Select “Record to this computer” so that the file is saved to your hard drive.

Use the “Pause” button to temporarily pause your recording. When you click the button again, you can resume your recording.

Use the “Stop” button to end your recording. When you click stop, your video will end.

When you have finished, select “End” and “End Meeting for All.” Zoom will begin to convert your presentation to a mp4 file and save it to your hard drive. Do NOT stop converting.

Find your MP4 file. Go to the designated folder on your computer’s hard drive. If you cannot find the folder, return the “Recording” tab in “Settings” and select “Open.” This will take you to the correct folder.

Open the correct MP4 file in the folder.

Watch the video to make sure you captured the full presentation, including audio.

If the file was not saved or the presentation has issues, contact the Zoom support team: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/201362003

What now?

Congratulations! You are now ready to upload your video to the platform.
